Tiny mittens are adorable, aren’t they? But finding ones that fit properly and actually stay on can be a frustrating task. Isn’t it funny how something so challenging to put on—hello there, little thumb that never goes in the right place!—somehow falls off in two minutes? We all want our toddlers to get plenty of fresh air, but that’s not going to happen unless they’re sporting a pair of warm, waterproof mittens that can stand up to a kid actually playing in the cold, wet snow. You don’t need to consider duct-taping mittens on anymore. These are our picks for the best winter mittens for toddlers.

1. N’Ice Caps Kids Easy-On Wrap Waterproof Thinsulate Warm Winter Snow Mitten

We love wrap-style mittens like N’Ice Caps Kids Easy-On’s, which have a fold-over flap: Undo it and the mitten opens wide so your toddler’s hand will slip in with no whining (well, one can hope). Fasten the hook and loop closure for a snug and secure fit. These super affordable toddler mittens come in close to three dozen colors and patterns and are perfect for your child’s first active winter outside. Insulated with 3M Thinsulate and featuring a grippy palm, the mittens are waterproof and warm, with a 2.5-inch knitted cuff you can tuck underneath your kid’s jacket sleeve to prevent snow from getting in.

2. Slivery Toddler Gloves

The outer fabric is waterproof and the soft inner will stay comfortable even after hours of sledding and snow angels. Available in 32 colors and patterns and in sizes 6 months to 6T.

Lined with lightweight, cozy faux shearling fleece lining, MCTi’s Kid Mittens come in black, pink, blue, or grey and feature a waterproof nylon outer shell and a long cuff with a hanging string you can loop through your child’s coat sleeves to be sure they never get lost. Reinforced, non-slip palm and finger grips make these perfect for building a snowman or sledding on the coldest days. With a reflective tape trim that makes the gloves visible on foggy or snowy days, these mittens are durable enough for any outdoor activity. The elastic wrist and buckle ensures the mittens stay on tightly. Bonus: There’s a three-year warranty against rips.

Available in blue, black and pink, Unigear’s Kids Ski Mittens feature 150g of Thinsulate insulation for total warmth even in the wettest environments. These mittens offer triple waterproof protection with a durable nylon outer fabric, a TPU coating and membrane inserts that suck out moisture. A sanity-saving, easy-access side zipper makes these mittens a cinch to put on, and you can adjust the Velcro closure so they stay on until you take them off. A sturdy leather fabric that covers palms and fingers allows your child to grip that carrot for the snowman’s nose with ease, and a hanging string with clips ensures you make through at least one winter without losing them.

6. Stonz Mittz Baby Mittens

Stonz Baby Mittens in light pink

For a snug, waterproof option, pick up a pair of Stonz Mittz Baby Mittens, which feature a wide over-the-arm opening that cinches easily, plus no thumb holes, so your child can easily slip their hands in. A dry-max waterproof insert and elasticized gauntlet make this a smart choice for toddlers who love to throw snowballs and go tobogganing. The long cuff goes halfway up the arm, so there’s no way any snow is getting in, and Velcro keeps the mittens from sliding off. The long zipper allows older toddlers to put them on and take them off themselves. Some parents say these run a little big, so size down if you want an extra-snug fit.

Getting the entire family out the door and to the airport is a task that warrants a vacation all its own. And oftentimes, some of the most important things are overlooked in the rush—including what you’re wearing. While comfort is key, there are several items to avoid wearing at the airport.

1. Shoes That Are Difficult to Take Off

Hiking Boots; Courtesy of TwilightSKY FOTOGRAFiE/Shutterstock.com

Multiple straps, buckles or ties on shoes will slow you down at airport security. Select slip-on styles to avoid the hassle. Vans and TOMS are great for travel days, and are available in a wide variety of solid colors and prints for both kids and adults.

2. Flip Flops or High Heels

Close up of person wearing black high heels while walking down the stairs

While flip-flops and high heels are easy to slip off and back on at airport security, they’re not a good idea. And while sandals might sound good—especially if you’re headed to the beach—airplanes are notoriously cold. Plus, who wants to walk through security barefoot? Heels are a no-no for obvious reasons.

3. Perfume

Passengers complain about headaches, asthma and allergies from others dousing themselves in their favorite scent. Save the perfume for your travel destination (or better yet, leave it at home to avoid the possibility of spills).

4. Jewelry

Baubles have to come off at security, so why risk losing or breaking them? Pack special pieces in a travel jewelry case and deck yourself out when you get to your destination.

5. Bobby Pins or Metal Hair Clips

Don’t forget you have to go through a metal detector. Save the bobby pins and metal hair clips for later and wear a soft headband if you want to wear your hair back. Many come with bows and pompoms to please fashionistas tall and small.

6. Tight Pants

You’ll be sitting in the airport and on the plane for hours—skinny jeans just aren’t practical. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style for comfort. Check out Kut from the Kloth jeans. They’re super-soft and mold to your shape for a slimming fit. A go-to for many travelers, the brand offers colorful corduroys, boyfriend jeans, and other styles.

7. Dresses

While flowing dresses seem effortlessly chic and easy to wear, they’re not ideal for the airport—particularly when it comes time to step into the metal detector and raise your arms (and especially if the dress is on the shorter side). Instead, opt for a flowy tunic and leggings.

8. Sweaters

Regardless of whether or not it’s cold outside, the inside of a plane can get stuffy and uncomfortable—and even make you sick. Instead of a sweater, choose a cotton shirt, which is more breathable and comfortable. And if you’re concerned about getting cold, follow the golden rule of travel: always pack layers!

What’s more relaxing than a day of sand and surf? The sea breeze, the warm sun, and best of all… the unimaginable amount of family stuff that needs to be hauled along: coolers, boogie boards, umbrellas, towels, sand toys, beach chairs, diaper bags, snorkel gear—plus a kid or three. Parents who don’t want to break their backs by dragging everything through heavy sand should invest in a sturdy beach wagon or cart.

Look for a lightweight, yet durable, high-capacity model that can hold at least 75 pounds. Ideally, be sure it’s a collapsible beach wagon that can easily slide into your vehicle’s trunk. Multiple mesh pockets are a beautiful thing for all the wet, sandy items you’ll be carting. Choose one that’s easy to maneuver, with an adjustable handle, and—we cannot stress this enough!—large, heavy-duty treaded wheels that are designed to navigate soft, deep sand. Here are our picks for the best beach wagons and carts for 2023.

1. MacSports XL Heavy Duty Collapsible Outdoor Folding Wagon

MacSports XL Heavy Duty Collapsible Outdoor Folding Wagon

Coming in at roughly 12 pounds, the MacSports XL Folding Wagon is as lightweight as it is durable. Its alloy steel frame can handle up to 300 pounds and comes with a cargo net to keep your beach gear secure. When you return home, this wagon folds down in seconds to fit in your car or shed until your next beach day.

2. Mybeachcart Foldable Beach Cart

With 12-inch balloon tires that easily glide over heavy sand, Mybeachcart’s Foldable Beach Cart makes hauling beach gear a breeze. It has a wide telescopic handle with a comfortable grip so even the tallest parent won’t have to hunch over to pull it along. Constructed of marine-grade anodized aluminum, this cart is lightweight but rugged. A 15×21-inch cargo deck with a non-slip padded platform can handle up to 165 pounds without your things sliding out onto the sand. The included oversized zippered mesh bag and two seven-inch buckle straps allow you to store everything from sand toys to sunscreen securely. And when you’re ready to go home, the cart folds flat and has a Velcro strap to keep it closed, while the wheels quickly deflate when you pull out the pin. If your family spends lots of time at the beach, this beach wagon is worth the investment.

You can hang up to four beach chairs on the extended top frame, and in the back, a smaller pocket can hold sunglasses, cameras, Frisbees, and snacks. There’s also a bottom tray and rack where you can slide a 48-quart cooler, a built-in insulated beverage compartment for snacks and drinks, plus a handy removable tote with a shoulder strap.

4. Moon Lence Collapsible Outdoor Utility Wagon

Measuring 36.6 x 22.4 x 23.6 inches and capable of holding up to 220 pounds, you can transport some serious beach gear in the Moon Lence Collapsible Outdoor Utility Wagon. The fabric is waterproof (always good for a day at the beach) and the telescoping handle can be adjusted to fit your height. 6. MacSports Folding Heavy Duty All Terrain Beach Wagon

Known for its range of rugged wagons and carts, Mac Sports Folding Heavy Duty All Terrain Beach Wagon is the model we recommend if you’ll be dragging a day’s worth of gear over deep sand. Featuring easy-clean fabric that’s UV- and mildew-resistant, this model’s all-terrain wheels can carry up to 150 pounds, although in very deep sand, you’re better off not making it too heavy. It has an adjustable handle and a spacious interior that easily fits an inflatable kiddie pool, chairs, umbrellas, food and beach toys. 8. Big Kahuna Beach Wagon

This beach wagon—which is designed for commercial use—can accommodate up to 350 pounds of gear, making it ideal for everything your family needs at the beach. A curved, ergonomic pull handle makes it easy for your kids to drag, too. The wagon’s walls are removable if you prefer to stack the deck with large items like camping gear and extra-large coolers.

Games for a family road trip need three ingredients in order to maximize their vacation mileage: portability, a minimum number of small parts, and a kid-friendly fun factor. Avoid the “Are we there yet?” blues and take a detour around the “tech trap” when you add one or more of these travel-ready games to your emergency road kit. From modern spins on retro favorites to cleverly designed all-in-one sets that kick searches for lost pieces to the curb, these are the best road trip games for families.

1. The Alphabet Game

The Alphabet Game; Courtesy Shutterstock

In this classic road trip game that doesn’t require a board or game pieces, players attempt to find words starting with every letter of the alphabet, going in order from A to Z. You can look at billboards, road signs, branded trucks, restaurant names, and more. It’s up to you whether to play cooperatively–with each player building off the group’s progress–or competitively, with everyone going through their own alphabet. Either way, when players spot their next word, they call out their letter and the word (“A! Arby’s!”) so everyone can keep track. Some people use the rule that if someone spots a graveyard, they can declare it and all other players will go back to “A”.

Another version of the Alphabet Game is for someone to pick a category (the original game is “groceries/food”, but it could be animals, places, famous people, or something else), and the family will take turns naming items from that category that begin with ascending letters from A to Z. For example, if one person starts with “aardvark,” the next person could follow up with “butterfly” and so on.

2. Melissa & Doug Flip to Win Hangman

A retro game made road-ready, Flip to Win Hangman by Melissa & Doug is one of the best road trip games for beginning readers (ages 6 and up). Designed with flippable, magnetic wooden letters, each game comes with an erasable whiteboard and a self-store dry-erase marker. The sturdy set really holds up to repeated kid (and adult) play, which is good because it’s addictive! It’s so fun, in fact, you’ll want to buy a second game for Grandma’s house!

3. Coggy by Fat Brain Toys

Get kids’ mental gears spinning as they build visual-spatial skills with Coggy by Fat Brain Toy Co. The mind-building travel game is designed as a single strand of connected patterned cogs, which players match to a series of corresponding pattern cards. Gears make a satisfying click as they pivot, making Coggy one of the best travel games for kids who need some sensory input when they’re cooped up in the car.

4. I Spy

I Spy game; Courtesy Amazon

No self-respecting list could leave out this classic kids’ road trip game! Players take turns selecting an object around them (ideally something in the car or that will remain in sight for a while), and giving the others a clue about it. The traditional formula is “I spy, with my little eye, something [color], or something beginning with [letter].”

But if you want to get preschoolers even more involved with the game, try the I Spy Travel Card Game from University Games. Similar to the board-free classic, this road trip game is seek-and-find style for ages 4 and up. The game contains 48 jumbo cards with simple pictures and corresponding text. Pre-readers will feel grown-up as they “read” about common road trip sights, and then race to be the first to locate them.

5. Travel Blurt

A favorite party game gets a travel makeover in Travel Blurt, a fast-talking word recall game for on-the-go play. Pit sibling against sibling or parent team against kid teams in a hilarious competition that will have everyone laughing out loud. A handy travel case and magnetic scorecards help keep the fun at your fingertips. One of the best road trip games for groups, Travel Blurt is for three to four players, ages 10 and up.

6. License Plate Game

License Plate game; Courtesy Amazon

Have your kids “collect” as many license plate states as they can find, writing each one down to keep track. They probably won’t find all 50 (looking at you, Alaska, and Hawaii), but especially if you’re driving cross-country, you’d be surprised how many people you’re sharing the road with. This is another kids’ road trip game that lends itself equally well to collaboration or competition: do they work together or collect their own lists of plates? Or go a step further and have them learn while playing with the Flip to Win License Plate Game by Melissa & Doug.

Easy to play and fun for all ages, it’s a scavenger-hunt style game that helps kids learn U.S. states and capital cities. The beauty of this smartly designed game—and what makes it one of the best road trip games available—is that the parts stay put. No more fishing loose pieces out of car seats and seat cushions, thanks to sturdy, flippable, magnetic wooden pieces! Adults will enjoy taking a trip down memory lane as they play along with the kids and revisit a childhood classic. Great for gift-giving, this game is for one to two players (or teams), ages 8 and up.

7. Interstate Highway Bingo Cards

Lure your family members away from their devices and into the driver’s seat on your next road trip travel adventure with Interstate Highway Bingo Cards by Regal Games. Fingertip shutters reveal photos of common road trip sights, such as a horse, rest area, farm house and police car. Be the first to get five pictures in a row, and become the king or queen of the road trip! The four-card set makes it easy for brothers, sisters, aunts, and uncles to get in on the scenery-spotting competition.

8. 20 Questions

Especially with younger kids, it often seems like the questions are endless. 20 Questions is a perfect way to get it out of their system. You’ve probably played it before, but just to refresh your memory: one player thinks of a person, place, or thing. The others take turns asking yes-or-no questions; after each question, they get a guess about what/where/who it is. If they don’t solve it after 20 questions, they lose.

9. Guess in 10-Cities Around the World

It’s the Game of 20 Questions, minus 10! In “Guess in 10-Cities Around the World,” players draw clue cards and, through the process of elimination, make guesses to identify one of 52 diverse metropolitan locations. Kids and parents will learn about the food, culture and monuments associated with the world’s most famous cities, from Rome to San Francisco. For parents looking to increase learning mileage on the road, this game for players ages 8 and up is one of the best road trip games to pack in your overnight bag.

10. FlashDash

FlashDash by Winning Fingers helps backseat travelers get the wiggles out, without waging a sibling turf war. A combination of the popular games Simon and Bop it, contained in a compact handheld electronic cube, FlashDash features four different speed and memory games, with lights and optional sound. For kids who need to move on long car rides, this Android device alternative is one of the best new road trip games. Designed for ages 6 to adult.

11. Cow on My Side

Cow in my side; Courtesy Shutterstock

This simple kids’ road trip game is a lot of fun for families driving through the countryside. When you see cows on your side of the road, yell “Cows on my side!” You get a point for each time you call a group of cows. If you spot cows on the opposite side, you can yell “Cows on your side!” and steal a point from your opponent. Passing a cemetery? The first person to yell “Ghost cow!” steals all the other side’s points.

Of course, you can always bring along a tablet or computer and put on one of these kids’ movies for road trips, but sometimes it’s nice to just engage everyone with some old-fashioned fun. Especially if your trip is on the longer side, it’s a good way to turn those potentially torturous hours into quality family bonding time.

As I wandered the racks of Unclaimed Baggage, a shopping wonderland where lost luggage goes to find new homes just outside of Huntsville, Alabama, I marveled at the number of Kindles, laptops, cameras, and yes, even diamond rings, in the display cases. Who were these people who were packing up their valuables in their checked bags? Didn’t they know the TSA rules?

There are just some things you should never pack away and risk never seeing again. While some are obvious (or so you would think), others aren’t, so let’s start with the basics.

1. Electronics

Electronic devices

Any item of value should never be checked into the belly of a plane. Small digital cameras, DSLR cameras, video cameras, laptops, Kindles, iPads, cell phones and even portable hard drives are all included in this category. If you would be sad to lose it, don’t check it. Carry it in a backpack or purse onto the plane.

If you have these items in your carry-on suitcase and you’re asked to check it, take them out. I once unpacked half of a carry-on suitcase into a backpack because I was forced to check my bag. I tried to explain that it was filled with camera gear—the flight crew didn’t care. I always pack an Eagle Creek packable bag just in case I need an extra bag on the road. It has come in handy more than once at the airport.

2. Makeup

Makeup bag

Pack your makeup bag in your carry-on bag, especially for international flights or if you have multiple connections. Items that aren’t easily replaced (i.e. that mineral powder it took you two years of research to finally settle on) should always be carried on the plane.

3. Jewelry

Watch and gold jewelry

Costume jewelry aside, if it has some bling, make sure your jewelry stays with you. Never, ever take off your diamonds at TSA security and put them through the security screener or these precious gems may go missing. These items will not set off the metal detector. You are safe to wear engagement rings, diamond stud earrings, tennis bracelets, necklaces, what have you.

Most recently, the team at Unclaimed Baggage found a seven-carat diamond ring in a lost checked bag. Someone actually packed a gorgeous, very pricey diamond ring that they were never able to find again. Don’t be that person. We can only assume a guy was about to propose, and was trying to keep it a secret. It’s amazing how many diamond engagement rings find their way to Unclaimed Baggage via checked bags.

The lesson here—bring your valuable jewelry with you. Even if it has no value to someone else, but it has value to you, pack your jewelry in your carry-on bags. Grandma can’t come back to give you another broach that has been passed down through four generations.

4. Medications

Weekly pill box

Prescriptions are one of the top things the airline asks you to take out of your carry-on bag when they ask you to check your bag. This is for good reason. In the cargo hold, these medications can get too hot, too cold, or they may get lost in transit. Many people travel with prescriptions they must take every day. It’s up to you to make sure you have them, not the airline. Keep them with you at all times. The airline cannot separate you from your medications if they are in your smaller carry-on backpack or purse.

5. Lovies

Teddy bear peeking out of suitcase

Oh, those beloved animals or snuggly lovies our children adore. If your child has a “Froggie” like mine, the world would end if it was lost. Although we have two, if we arrived at our destination without one, our trip could be ruined and no one would sleep that night. Froggie is a member of our family. You don’t check members of your family in cargo. You carry them with love onto the plane. Pack those special friends in your child’s backpack, diaper bag or your own bag so you always know where it is. Our extra “Froggie” is always in my purse for emergencies, while my son carries his own for snuggles during takeoff, landing, and naps on the plane.

6. Baby Gear

Baby holding pacifier

Diapers, baby formula, wipes, as well as any other necessities should be thrown into the diaper bag or backpack, and you will want enough to last you at least 24 to 48 hours. Delays happen. Airports don’t always have baby items available in the shops. Even worse, the shops may be closed by the time your flight is cancelled.

Formula and pacifiers are very specific to each child. Don’t get stuck because you checked everything you need for your little one in your checked bag. The airline won’t always give your bag back just because your flight got delayed or cancelled and you have to sleep in a hotel overnight. If you pack smart, you won’t be stuck with a soggy child and even crankier parents.

7. Change of Clothes

Clothes

Speaking of soggy babies (and their parents), always pack a change of clothes for the entire family when you fly. You just never know when you’ll have diaper failure, a juice box explosion or someone will experience a bit of air sickness on that flight. For every parent who thinks they have a child who is the best traveler, there’s another parent across the aisle grinning and saying “I told you so” when that perfect kid is throwing up all over their father (it’s true).

No matter your child’s age, accidents happen. From the time my boys were three months old I have been peed on, pooped on, spit up on, and had entire cups of water/apple juice/ginger ale dumped on me. If you can’t stand to overpack, at the very least pack an extra shirt. My husband, who has dealt with the worst of our kids’ accidents in flight, packs a complete wardrobe change, and we still pack outfits for both children, too.

Best case scenario, you never use it and you have extra clothes at your destination. Worst case scenario, you have to use that outfit because of an accident. Aren’t you now glad that you had it and no one is sitting in a puddle of something you have to explain to the flight attendant?

8. Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries

Have you ever wondered WHY you need to take uninstalled lithium batteries out of your checked bag, or that power pack out of your new fancy suitcase? It’s pretty simple—fire. There is a risk that a lithium battery could combust. According to ConsumerReports.org, “the potential for a battery with unprotected electrodes to come in contact with a loose metal object and short out, causing it to ignite” is the actual problem. Although installed batteries are also a risk, as lithium batteries can heat up, they are still technically allowed to be stowed in the cargo hold if they are installed in your laptop. However, we suggest you pack all valuable electronics in your carry-on bag whenever allowed. It’s just good common sense.

There’s definitely a lot of criteria to consider as a busy mom or hardworking woman on the go. Clothing needs to be practical, functional and versatile, above all. Of course, our clothing still has to be stylish, which is why we often look for pieces that are easily mixed and matched and cute while still being durable. Oh, and it also has to be affordable.

Shopping for clothing that ticks off all the boxes can be a bit overwhelming at times, but if you have a good starting point, it can still be kind of fun. These are the 10 best clothing brands for moms and women.

1. Good American

Good American jeans

Ladies, don’t get hung up on the fact that Good American is a Kardashian-founded brand. Good American originally launched as an all-denim line, but has expanded to activewear and other basics, including some of the best jeans around. They’re on the pricier side, but last forever and there are good sales a few times a year. The denim is stretchy, but still sucks everything in (particularly the high-waisted styles) while still being incredibly comfortable. There’s a huge variety of styles to choose from in varying lengths including shorts and styles that run the gamut from classic dark wash and distressed boyfriend jeans to vintage-inspired flares and even maternity. They even offer free home try-on.

2. Zella

Jeans and a top from Zella brand at Nordstrom

Zella is an activewear and athleisure brand that’s sold exclusively at Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack and features items that easily transition from the gym to running errands around town or even lunching with friends. Their leggings are of the buttery soft variety, while still being ultra-functional for even an intense workout. They also offer joggers, tanks, tees, sweaters and more in a variety of neutral and new-neutral shades that are easy to mix and match. If budget is a factor, try their more affordable offshoot, Z by Zella sold at Nordstrom Rack, for similar items at a fraction of the cost.

3. Athleta

White jeans and workout pants from Athleta

Athleta, which is a part of the Gap/Old Navy family, has long been a standby for active women, but ever since athleisure became trendy, the brand has been expanding its collections to include lots of items that are both functional and fashionable. It offers tons of fantastic daily, casual options like the signature activewear leggings, linen pants and shorts and sculpting denim, as well as swimsuits, outerwear, dresses and tops all designed with features to appeal to women who really love to get out there and live life. Athleta is a great source for travel-friendly clothing as well!

4. Madewell

Two women wearing Madewell clothing

If you’re looking for effortless style, Madewell has you covered. The brand was originally launched as a denim company, but has since expanded to chic and often eco-friendly clothing and accessories to pair with your jeans. You can even find simple, cotton dresses that are comfy enough to run around with the kids in, and lots of other fun wardrobe staples that make you look like the cool mom even when you don’t have the energy to do more than throw on the first thing you grab from your closet. Madewell also features models in a variety of sizes to help you select your best fit. Look out for promo codes!

5. Everlane

Two models wearing outfits from Everlane

Everlane is a one-stop shop for an ethically made minimalist, mom-friendly wardrobe. The brand offers everything from business casual jumpsuits and dresses to denim, athletic wear and loungewear. Fabrics are comfortable and practical and colors are wearable, but still fashionable, so you’ll feel totally on-trend every time you were an Everlane piece. They even sell undergarments and footwear, so you can practically build a new wardrobe from scratch all in one place, especially since the prices are fairly affordable as well.

Bonus: Stitch Fix

If you are tired of spending hours and hours sifting through racks of clothes at the mall and sweating in and out of fitting rooms, we highly recommend a personal shopping service like Stitch Fix. Stitch Fix has members fill out a style profile before shipping out a customized box of five pieces of clothing and/or accessories from various brands, including labels that are exclusive to them. Members can leave notes for their personal stylist describing exactly what they’re looking for, describing their body shape, etc. or leave it completely up to the stylist to choose items for them. You can even rate specific items on their website, as well as leave detailed feedback on every item you actually receive in order to get better and better matches with each box. You can either sign up for recurring boxes or schedule a “Fix” whenever you choose. Each box is assessed a $20 styling fee that is deducted from any purchases you make, but if you don’t buy anything, you lose the fee.
